Core departments an SME needs to function effectively

Every business, irrespective of the size, requires some form of organized corporate structure to operate well. When a business does not have an organized system, problems arise in production levels and its policy implementation. Whatever a company's core business, there are some departments essential for its basic functioning. As a small business owner, you will most likely handle these roles yourself for a while, but as your business grows, you will want to delegate responsibilities to your employees.

Administrative Department

The business needs managers to oversee the activities of the employees and implement the company's directives. This department could also double as the HR department and handle the responsibility of recruiting and managing staff for the company.

Accounting and Finance Department

This department handles the financial records for the business. The accounting department monitors all the company's income and expenditures, and they give periodic reports to the CEO. They also keep records of amounts to be received from customers and payments to suppliers for goods and services.

Production department

The production department handles the manufacturing of the company's products based on orders specified by management. They communicate with the managers to make available the materials which they would need for production. They also liaise with the sales & marketing department to make changes and adjustments to products based on their needs.

Sales & Marketing Department

This department is responsible for building relationships with customers, meeting specific income-based targets, and pitching new products to customers. All these are achieved by either placing a salesperson in a physical store to sell products or the sales team's staff reaching out to prospective customers via phone calls, e-mails, or house-to-house visitation. This department handles product packaging design and other materials used to inform potential customers of what the company has to offer. They also research to know the needs of the customers, thereby ensuring customer satisfaction.

These are the necessary departments that need to be created for the business to function smoothly. As time goes on and as your business grows, you can include other departments or split departments with dual functions to meet the business's growing demands.
