Welcome to another productive week of making money and succeeding in businesses. We shall talk about things to put in place to manage an SME successfully.

When it comes to running a business, having an idea is particularly good. But apart from that, there are other things you need to put in place and execute for your business to yield outstanding results. Here are some tips that can help business owners manage their business successfully.

1. Have a plan and write it out.

Without a written plan, your business idea is nothing but a dream. Writing out your plan does not mean it must be as bulky as an encyclopaedia. It could be a few pages stating crucial information such as your plans, objectives, strategies, financing, a sales and marketing plan, and the specific amount of money you need to get it all done. Putting all these down in writing is a vital step towards success in your business.

2. Be flexible with your plans.

Every business idea usually faces challenges, especially after you have written out your plan and begun execution. It would seem as if many things would not turn out well. So, prepare to make adjustments and be flexible with your business plan as the need arises. Sometimes, you might have to discard your initial plan and write a new one, especially when new and better ideas come up.

3. Be humble and open to taking advice from others.

Having people who give you advice regarding your business is important because you do not know it all. You will need their business advice and they will regularly check up on business progress and hold you accountable for your goals and objectives. Always endeavour to keep to your words and stick to your commitments, even in the face of difficulties and challenges. Take correction where necessary. Doing all this is for your personal gain and the growth and development of your business.

4. Keep records of everything and carry out periodic financial reviews

Create written records for everything because it will pay off for the business later on. It will also help to train your staff on consistency in record keeping. The financial aspects of the business should also be properly documented; the cash that comes into the business, expenses, final balance, profits made and the losses made. All these records should be audited and reviewed from time to time. Find out how much cash you need to run the business and do not start without the required amount.

5. Assign duties to your employees and avoid micromanaging them.

A manager's duty is to assign responsibilities to staff and then monitor the progress of the work assigned to them. Avoid controlling your workers and dictating word for word what you want them to do. When you assign duties effectively, the results you get will exceed your expectations. Organize a training and orientation plan for your staff so they will know what is required of them at all times. You can also employ incentive-based systems to motivate them to put in their best performance.

6. Make regular use of the Internet.

The internet (particularly the social media platforms) is a very strong and cost-effective tool to aid your business with marketing and building networks with prospective customers/clients. It also gives you equal opportunities with your competitors. Therefore, you must use the internet for the growth of your business.

Being an entrepreneur is interesting, even though you might experience some challenges along the way. Since you decided to become one, put in your best in applying these tips discussed and watch out for positive business outcomes.
